Tooth extraction for children

Removing children’s teeth as a last resort

Sometimes, children need to have teeth removed, even though most baby teeth fall out naturally. A tooth extraction may be necessary if the natural process doesn’t occur, especially to make space for incoming adult teeth. For example, if a baby tooth doesn’t fall out on its own and causes crowding, an extraction might be needed to ensure the adult teeth can grow properly.

Tooth extractions may also be required if a tooth is damaged or infected beyond repair. This could happen due to an injury, infection, or severe cavity. In such cases, removing the tooth can prevent further damage and maintain oral health.

During your initial consultation, our team will assess whether extraction is a required treatment for your child.

Types of Tooth Extractions

Simple Extraction

Your paediatric dentist gently loosens and removes the tooth using a local anaesthetic. This is a quick and painless procedure for visible baby teeth.

Complex Extraction

In cases where a tooth is stuck in the jawbone, laughing gas or a general anaesthetic might be needed. This is typically required for more severe cases.

Sedation Options

For children who feel anxious about dental procedures, we offer safe sedation options:

Laughing Gas (Nitrous Oxide)

This is a mild sedative that helps your child relax during the procedure. It’s administered through a mask and allows your child to remain awake but calm. The effects wear off quickly after the procedure is done.

General Anaesthetic

For more complex extractions or when a child is highly anxious, general anaesthesia may be recommended. This option puts your child into a deep sleep, ensuring they feel no discomfort during the procedure. The anaesthesia is administered by a specialist anaesthestist and is carefully monitored throughout.

Post-Procedure Care

After a tooth extraction, it’s important for your child to avoid hard or crunchy foods and stay hydrated. Monitor any pain, and if swelling occurs, contact your paediatric dentist promptly.
